Water damage and wear on engineered oak flooring before restoration

The challenge

Water damage on a limited wear layer

Engineered flooring has a genuine timber surface, but that wear layer is finite. Here it was already relatively thin, so another restoration needed to remove only what was necessary while addressing general wear and localised water-related damage.

The assessment

Sanding was possible, but only with control

The remaining oak layer was assessed before carefully controlled sanding began. Delaminated areas were treated locally through gluing and sealing rather than assuming the whole floor required replacement.

Restoration process

How The Floor Was Restored

01

Wear-Layer Assessment

The remaining real-wood surface and previous wear were assessed first.

02

Controlled Sanding

The surface was sanded cautiously to protect the limited wear layer.

03

Localised Repair

Affected delaminated areas were glued and sealed where appropriate.

04

Protective Finish

The floor was sealed and protected with two coats of Bona Traffic HD Silk Matt.

Finished engineered oak flooring after repair and refinishing

The result

A sound floor retained rather than replaced

The restoration improved the worn appearance, dealt with repairable local damage and renewed protection across the 60m² area. It also demonstrates why engineered floors must be assessed individually before sanding.
