Project summary

Project Summary

Location

New Silksworth, Sunderland

Floor

Engineered oak plank

Issues

Scratches and uneven sunlight-related colour

Finish

Bona Traffic HD Silk Matt

Scratched engineered oak with uneven colour associated with sunlight exposure

The constraint

Very little sanding depth remained

Engineered flooring has a real oak surface, but previous sanding reduces what remains. This floor had already been sanded aggressively, so further work had to be measured and conservative.

Colour variation

Sunlight changes cannot simply be treated as a coating

The uneven colour was associated with long-term light exposure. Careful sanding can improve the surface, but UV-related timber change is not always something that can be removed completely, particularly when wear-layer depth is limited.

Restoration process

How The Floor Was Restored

01

Assess Wear Layer

Previous sanding history and remaining oak were considered first.

02

Controlled Sanding

Only the preparation needed for a sound finish was undertaken.

03

Seal

The refined surface was sealed consistently.

04

Protect

Two coats of Bona Traffic HD Silk Matt renewed the protective system.

Finished engineered oak floor with renewed protection

The result

A carefully renewed engineered floor

The scratches and tired finish were improved without treating the engineered boards like unlimited solid timber. The floor retained its useful wear layer and gained renewed protection.
