The challenge

A tired parquet floor with years of wear

Finger parquet has a distinctive small-block pattern, but that detail can become muted when old finish dulls, traffic marks build up and individual blocks begin to look visually uneven. In this Peterlee home, the floor still had character, but years of use had left the surface tired and flat.

The right approach was careful preparation rather than replacement. The aim was to bring back definition in the block pattern, improve the consistency of the surface and protect the timber for everyday use.

The assessment

Checking the parquet before restoration

Parquet restoration needs a proper assessment before sanding begins. Small blocks, old adhesive, gaps and movement can all affect the safest method, especially where a patterned floor has been covered by older coatings for many years.

WoodXpert checked the stability, surface condition and likely repair requirements before deciding on a restoration route. Once the floor was confirmed as suitable, the plan focused on controlled sanding, careful preparation and a protective finish that would keep the parquet character visible.

The restoration process

Careful sanding and preparation

The restoration was carried out in planned stages: inspection, room preparation, progressive sanding, careful work with the block pattern, surface refinement and a suitable protective finish.

01

Inspection

The parquet was checked for movement, block stability, surface wear and areas needing extra care before restoration.

02

Room Preparation

The working area was prepared so sanding and finishing could be carried out cleanly and methodically.

03

Progressive Sanding

The floor was sanded through controlled stages to remove tired finish and bring the timber surface back evenly.

04

Pattern Care

Extra attention was given to the small-block layout so the finger parquet pattern remained crisp and balanced.

05

Surface Refinement

The timber was refined before finishing so colour, grain and block definition could read consistently across the room.

06

Protective Finish

A suitable wood floor finish was applied to protect the restored parquet while keeping the appearance natural.

The result

A cleaner, warmer and more defined parquet floor

The finished floor looked brighter, cleaner and more consistent, with the finger parquet pattern visible again. The restoration improved the tone and definition of the small blocks without losing the character that made the original floor worth saving.

A protective finish gave the timber a more practical surface for daily living, helping the restored parquet remain easier to maintain while preserving its original small-block identity.
